I'm a newbie at turkeys. Just started with turkeys this past Spring and LOVE them. They have so much personality. BUT... I have a question that I haven't found an answer to and was wondering if someone could help.

Our midget white hen who is about 6 months old has started acting a little strange. Whenever anyone walks in to the pen she walks over to them and then immediately sits on the ground and won't get up. She splays out her wings and makes a strange type of hissing noise. She eats and drinks fine, appears healthy. I'm hoping this just has something to do with her maturing and looking for a mate?????

You know I'm not sure. I have picked her up before and she doesn't like it very much. When she does this I will squat down by her and talk to her and pet her for a while. She won't get up again until I leave the pen and she can't see me anymore.

OH NO!!! Poor thing, she's in for a surprise then!

Her mate passed away about 2 months ago for unknown reasons. I have a Royal Palm that hasn't matured enough for me to tell if he's a she or vice-versa yet. I'm hoping it's a tom. Maybe if the RP is a he, it will help her out a little

Yep....... she REALLY likes you or she REALLY wants your attention. My Blue Slate Blueberry will keep walking in front of you, and laying down, until you pet her or pick her up and carrier her around.

She is wanting to mate. With turkeys it's hens choice unlike other poultry. The hens will pick the mate and lay down for them. She spreads her wings out to steady herself for the tom, he will stand on her back and wrap his toes around her wings.

Unless of course my RP turns out to be the jake I hope he is. That's her only hope, at least this year.
