Broody raised chicks are amazing. It’s 25F outside. This chick is not quite 4 weeks old and it’s drinking water off the block of ice a dumped out of the water bucket this morning. Another one of as standing on the block but ran away before I could get my camera out of my pocket. Most places recommend chicks this age be kept at 75F-80F

Broody raised chicks are definitely healthier, more hardy and robust than brooder raised. Your broody is doing a fabulous job at raising her chicks! ❤️

Agree! I just love to watch a mama hen with her babies.

We get a lot of them around here. I like watching them do their broken wing act to distract predators. This is the first time I have found the nest. They are so camouflaged in the wood mulch
It's interesting how they have evolved to play wounded to lure predators away, pretty little birds they are too. ❤️

Yep, ducks do the same thing. When I’m running my boat up the river I often get ducks attempting to get me to chase them. They fly real low to the water splashing around like they can’t take off.

Wow I had no idea Ducks did this too, very interesting! The NightJars around here do this too, just as the Killdeer do. I've been hiking around this valley and have come up on their nests and they try and lure me away by feigning injury. I have never been able to find a nest. 😁

We have killdeer too. Sometimes they nest out in the middle of the yard with no cover. I'm always afraid they will be hit by the mower but they start the injured act and show themselves.

They are so interesting to watch!
