Can anyone tell me or does anyone have any personal experience regarding Stromberg's? They seem a little pricey, but they are in Minnesota so it's not that far for postal travel. Just trying to get an idea whether we should go with them or head up to 4H's house in southern Wisconsin. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Stromberg's doesnt have chicks of their own. They sell supplies and have chicks drop shipped from another hatchery which is why they are "pricey". Even though they are from Minnesota the chicks more than likely will come from Texas.

I just got off the phone with Stromberg's. I called them because I wanted the answer straight from them regarding them using hatcheries. Not that I didn't believe anyone, I just am the kind of person to go straight to the horse's mouth (so to speak). Anyway, the lady on the other end did say that they used hatcheries and that they themselves were not a hatchery but a middle man. She also went on to state that in our case of what we were wanting, that we would have to choose between the Partridge Cochin and the Silver Spitzhauben since they were from different hatcheries.

I could not believe she was saying this. At first I was trying to be gracious. I did feel she was a little short with me since I called the company out (by asking my question directly I mean). I didn't take it personally because I figured I would strike a nerve with my question and forthrightness. However, I was unprepared to have to decide between two breeds that were not my decision to make. My husband was the one that wanted those two specific breeds. I felt it was his decision to make if we were to continue with this company. I told the lady on the other end of the phone this very thing and her reply was "well, you need to make the decision now if you want an order". To which I replied "there will be no order". She then told me that "I needed to call them back once I spoke to my husband and tell them one way or the other". I told her "she would have my answer....if I don't call back, then you know what my answer is".

During this whole conversation, I stayed very low keyed and right to the point. Getting agitated and showing it does not do anyone any good. I just wanted everyone to know what my experience was. I did call my husband and his response was this. "Well, I guess that lady on the phone decided it for us. Cross them off our lists and make sure you write something up in the forum to let others know". And that folks, is the end of the story.

I used to work for a couple of hatcheries and you wouldn't believe the stuff that goes on with these kind of incidents.

To me it's not right as you think your buying from a reputable company or you think your buying chicks loca and they end up coming half the country away.

Take for example the started pullets that come from McMurray...these come from a hatchery right here in Ohio....

Look at the prices for started pullets in their magazine, it's crazy!

Everyone has to make their buck.

GOOD LUCK,

Hi, I just confirmed that the "Prominent Breeder - Limited Offering" chicks sold by Stromberg's are supplied by Urch / Turnland Poultry, also in Minnesota. So that speaks well for Stromberg's; Urch / Turnland really is a prominent breeder, and has super chickens.

Best - exop
