Ethel is almost 2 and was healthy until about 2-3 days ago (my best guess) I noticed her wet and bleedy looking butt this morning. I read up a bit on here so I bathed her and am keeping her isolated. She has eaten a bit and drank water. poop seems loose but color ok There were maggots pre bath but none since. I used Prep H though this looks far beyond that. Can anyone tell from the pics what I may be dealing with? I don't have any bird vets around here so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks

I am not a veterinarian or a doctor but I think she needs to drink more water and eat more. Have she been bitten by a mosquito? She is having a Cloacitis (Vent Gleet). It is a disease that happens in chickens in the vent/anus. The treatment for it is idk. But I know she is having a Cloacitis. What have she been eating/drank?

thank you for the advice! I will investigate that. She is and has been eating an organic layer feed with occasional sunflower seeds or quinoa (just finished molting and the protein helps) all of my girls free range in my yard and eat various regular bugs. her 3 other siblings are fine so I'm not sure diet/water is an issue as they have access to lots of both. yes she could have been bitten by a mosquito though they aren't bad at all...yet!

Hi, I have just deal with the same problem and it seemed to occur after our Penny had difficulty laying an egg. She has always had a few girl issues and layed very big eggs, often soft shelled. Once before one broke in her but she was nursed back to health. On Sunday this same thing happened as you described and after noticing the drops of blood we isolated her. It was very nasty and like you there were maggots in her swollen vent. After reading up on this I believe she had a broken egg inside to cause the hemorrhaging. I washed and tended her as her bleeding continued. The smell from an infection was awful and the vent very swollen. Our Penny seemed to expel more of her insides. She made it through the night but as heart breaking as it was we had to put her down the next day. Still so bummed to have this happen to one of my pets that seemed so healthy a day earlier.

Thank you for responding and i am sooo sorry about Penny. I lost 4 12 week olds to a racoon last week and have one survivor with half a face. I miss my girls too. I found a vet on line who diagnosed her with flystrike and he was right on. She is recovering nicely
Thank you again!!
