Hi. I treated my flock of 5 for tapeworms using safeguard (the poultry one) in their water for 5 days. I will confess the medicated water wasn’t drank much the last day so perhaps the flock didn’t get enough. None the less, here we are just less than a month later. They have a new coop, new run, had been dewormed and I noticed the return of worms in their poop today.

I will do another round of the safeguard and just really make sure they get all of the meds. I just put my teenage chicks out in the run (separated) and they enjoy the run when the big girls are in the yard, so I will treat them too. Is there anything I can do to treat the run? I try to keep it clean and poop fairly picked up. The ground is a mixture of dirt and sand.

*for those curious, I know the safeguard was working as the second day after the water treatment I saw a huge passing of the worms.

If you're talking about aquasol, it doesn't claim to treat tapeworms.. it claims effecacy against round worms and cecal worms.. and only adult life stages at that (possibly what you saw on day 2?)..

You can see the recommended treatment for tapeworms from a trusted advisor in post #3 of the following linked thread..

Other suggestions in post #2 from of the following link (also a trusted advisor)..

Both are suggesting the use of Praziquantel with regards to tapeworms.

Photos would be helpful.

"the Chicken" Safeguard is Aquasol which treats Roundworms and Cecal worms (under certain conditions). Read the manufacturer's data which can be found on their website.

At that low of a dose, it's doubtful Aquasol would treat any type of Tapeworms.

As mentioned, Praziquantel is commonly used to treat Tapeworms in poultry.

Dosing and products that contain Praziquantel are in this thread:
