The Health Benefits of Dandelions

Meh. No science in those claims. Try this:

Histomorphological studies of broiler chicken fed diets supplemented with either raw or enzyme treated dandelion leaves and fenugreek seeds

(full disclosure, I deliberately plant fenugreek - its a good Methionine source - and allow dandelion to grow wild in my acres of weeds).

Effect of Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) supplement on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens

(Negative Result - small study size)

The effect of feeding different levels of dandelion leaf powder (Taraxacum officinale) in the diet on the productive and physiological performance of broiler chickens, strain Ross-308.

(Positive Result - small study size)

Potential Application of Dandelion (Taraxacum Mongolicum Hand.-Mazz.) on Broiler Chickens: Growth Performance, Expression of Tight Junction Protein and Mucin Genes, and Microbiota Composition in Ileum
(Not peer reviewed)

Nutritional Analysis of Dandelion

summation? GOOD green Methionine source. Methionine is necessary to effective connective tissue development, inlcuding the digestive tract - it is, in fact, the first limiting amino acid and the most key to peak development of hatchling birds, followed closely by Lysine.

Thanks for the link. Still waiting for them to appear here. We're supposed to get 4" of snow tonight!
I don’t know about anyone else but I am so done with the snow! I am already dreading the rainy Spring weather.😩 We had big fat snow flakes and cold weather on April Fool’s day! I told my husband that at any time, the sun would come out and say “April Fools!!” And sure enough, it did! (Shine, that is, not say it!🤣
That’s life in S.E. Ohio though! Fluctuating weather seemingly every minute.

I saw this article and thought it had some good information about dandelions. My chickens LOVE ❤️ the greens. I am so excited to finally see them growing in my yard. I was substituting them with kale this past winter. The dandelions are cheaper, LOL!

I'm trying to figure out if I can eat the dandelions, either in salads or soups as a kale substitute. I'm taking some cooking classes (once a month) so maybe I'll remember to ask our teacher. Like you, my chickens love all the dandelions that I pull and throw into the chicken run.

I don't know about all the claims and benefits of dandelions, but I know that my chicken egg yolks are a darker orange when my chickens have access to fresh greens. I just try to offer the girls a variety of food, and not just commercial feed.

Thank you for the in-depth study information. I found it to be very interesting and detailed. 😊

I first heard about people adding dandelions to their salad when I was in grade school (about 40 years ago). I was invited to dinner at my friend’s house and her mom talked about how good they were. I was surprised and skeptical. But then found out that quite a few people ate them in various ways. Dandelion wine, jelly for toast, tea or boiled or just sautéed in a pan.
My great Aunt Mollie who was born the year the Titanic sank, used to go out in the yard and gather them as well as mustard greens and other such things to eat. She and my Grandma’s family grew up in the hills of Kentucky and they ate these greens all the time, both because they liked them and because they grew up in a time of poverty and the Great Depression. Food was scarce and they had to grow it or do with what was available. She carried that mindset until she died at the age of 103.

We have had 2 pretty bad storms here last week’s storms spawned 3 tornadoes with one hitting a couple miles from us that was last Wednesday and tomorrow it’s going to be bad again. I am ready for some quiet, bug free, storm free spring days. Our chickie babies are handling this March and April madness better than the humans are. We live in Vancleave MS, and we are more prepared for hurricanes than tornadoes. Told hubby if it snows we are moving to Belize I am not a snow person.

I feel for you - we get the same storms about a day later. Thus far, we've been very fortunate. Its been a year, already!

We we’re just talking about This at dinner the other night.
Dandelions were brought over the Atlantic and planted on purpose because of their high medicinal value. Now we pull them and have the mindset it’s a nasty weed.

Ok to eat in salad, dry it, step in tea whatever.

We have gotten away from the basics here now in the West.
