I have been thinking the same thing but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wild duck where I live but know that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. I decided to try and incubate the last one I found in the duck house and it’s developing which was exciting!Easily could be a wild female sneaking in for a safe place to nest. The males may have attracted her. Leave the eggs, you might wind up with a free replacement female. If you keep picking them up, she will decide that this not a good place to nest and find another spot.
That's great, good luck with the egg, keep us updated.I have been thinking the same thing but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wild duck where I live but know that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Nope. I haven’t had any recent eggs since my last post though. And I recently got three female Cayugas who are now in lock down inside the duck run/coop so nothing is able to get in there either. One thought/question I had was if it were possible my mallards were stealing them from somewhere nearby. I guess I may never knowDid you ever get to the bottom of the phantom egg layer?
No there was a hairline crack in the egg and it didn’t make it unfortunately.Did the egg make it to hatching? I’m guessing not or you would have some idea of what type of duck it was.
