Please note that our chickens free range, the run looks small but it's only shelter really for there food and just incase we have to put them inside while we do something in the garden.
We added 4 Vents in either corner of the coop, along with two windows. During the summer these all pretty much stay open. The vents have wired mesh and the windows stay closed at night. Even though we don't get predators here it's best to stay safe! We have an Emu who does a great job at scaring anything off if anything does come into the garden. haha! We also plan to add screen guards and mesh to the windows eventually.
We also insulated the roof. Originally it wasn't and we have a metal roof, it started to get hot in there, bless them! The backside and rightside of the coop are protected by fencing which shelters the coop from sun beaming onto it. The left side we have a fence and the curly willow shelters it from the sun also. So it's now much cooler in that coop and they're very thankful for it!
We changed the perch recently to make it higher off the ground but not too close to the vents. They love their new perch! We also changed the nesting boxes to 3 instead of six. We have 4 chickens and we do plan to get another 4 next year. We were advised 3 nesting boxes will be completely fine for 8 chickens. We don't plan to get anymore than 8! If it does become an issue we'll just add another box.
We also use Aspen bedding. We use Sand for the outside in the run as it's much easier to clean up and sweep away left over cucumber or watermelon we give them, etc. For the nesting boxes we use Aspen Nests that we get off amazon! They love them!

I'm very happy how our chicken coop turned out. We originally was one of those people who bought a prefab coop and it was so small even though they said it's for 6 chickens?? To this day I still don't understand. Unless you have miniature chickens then I guess so. lol! It's been such a fun project and I doubt it's even finished yet. I'm bound to find something else to add in future.

Thank you for taking the time to browse!
