This time before starting hatch I dipped eggs in bleach! Hold on...... only a few drops.

The last batch 50 eggs I hatched only 18 hatched and 3 died too weak. I think because most of the eggs had a bacterial growth and started to rot..... So I tossed lots of the eggs.

This time, I am not having any problems. I am on day 13 and all chickens are alive and no weepy/leaky or smelly eggs!

1) I did not wash eggs

2) (eggs are same temp as eggs before starting bator) I did "dip" all eggs in a bowl of water 30-45 seconds water that has 3/4 DROPS of bleach

4) bator was CLEANED well and scrubbed with bleach water and set to dry

5) start bator as before

and no problems all eggs and embryos are just fine! Has any one else done this?

No, I've never done that but I've never had a single stink egg either.

My homemade Darthbator is a mini-frige and simple to clean thoroughly. The other is a wine - cooler also simple to get clean.

Most of the time I'll wipe a really foul egg with a damp cloth but I'm not a fanatic about it. I don't have hatch problems.

I hand turn or carton turn, when I'm hand turning they're resting on a thick wool mat my daughter knitted for the incubator. I wash and dry them before each hatch.

I dry hatch, so the wool is not a bacteria problem.

If you have problems with bacteria, yours was probably a good solution, since the just laid egg is not going to react to that little bit of water and bleach and short term immersion.

With the use of the BLEACH, I expect that your Black Australorps will probably look like Buff Orpingtons or WHITE rocks.....depending upon the amount of BLEACH used..........

Some commercial hatcheries use a 10% bleach solution to sanitize eggs, some fumigate. Fumigation is nasty, and can be dangerous.

I've used the bleach solution, and got good hatches. I used 10%, I'm not sure 3 or 4 drops would be enough to do anything. In how much water? Was it one of the concentrated bleaches, that take a lot less, these days? As long as you don't exceed the 10% strength, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything.

If my hatching eggs are dirty, I wash them, full immersion in soapy water, rinse, then air dry, and, if any were really icky, I dip in the bleach solution. I did this with my last two batches of eggs, and hatched 17 out of 23 on the first one, and 10 out of 11 on the other.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out!

I guess it was a bowl with about 1 gallon of water. I put 3/4 drops of regular household bleach!

This was my own idea, because last hatch was so stinky and rotten from some eggs. This has happened on the last 2 batches and I do not know why.....

I had no idea that this is what hatcheries use..... But they must do something! I am using the "dry" incubation (only little water in bator about 1/4 cup)

I think if "poopy" eggs are washed it puts bacteria IN the eggs..... So I lightly "dip" the eggs in same temp water for 3-/45 seconds.

For REAL dirty eggs, I just toss them or crack them on the ground and feed to chick/s chickens directly. I won't hatch a real dirty egg or eat it either!!!

So far I am on Day 16 and all embryos (those in light eggs can see) are still alive. I will have a hatch of about 60!!!!!

A bit I learned from cloth diapering my babies...wool is rarely a bacteria problem especially if it's 'lanolized'.
It's actually antibacterial and completely breathable while being water-resistant. Wool is an amazing thing and is perfect for use in an incubator.

Hi There, WalksWithDog !

This "Old Fart" is doing fine! (just ate some pinto beans, HOT Chile, and rice, so I can live up to my reputation!)

Haven't got the incubator "up and running" yet...but I've got 2 broody hens setting now. One is a Buff Orpington. The other is a black roundhead game-hen. I should have some chicks soon.

I should have my incubator "on-line" by middle of September...gotta get some parts.

Hopefully, no chicks BEFORE middle of next week. I won't be buying more FEED until then. My Juvenile "Black Sex-Links" eat like they expect to grow to Turkey-Size!!! (They had BETTER lay a TON of eggs to start paying back the feed-bill !!!)

Gotta get off my arse and build another small coop....I think 4' x 8'.

I expect to be getting close to 2 dozen eggs/day by Thanksgiving.
(Gotta get my "quiche recipes" out and see if REAL MEN truly EAT QUICHE !!!)

These will be mostly brown eggs (unbleached).

no need to bleach my beard---already no melanin there.
