Sweet Home Alabama!!
This was purchased from Walmart as an "on the vine" tomato about three weeks ago. It was sitting in the window over my sink. We were going to have BLTs for lunch and when I picked it up it just didn't look right with its bumps. Then when I sliced it, it was full of tiny plants. I then pealed the skin off the top to expose the bumps... more plants .
I put it in a separate container to get some size on it and I will repot and try and grow some of these.
I thought Walmart irradiated all produce, thus preventing this not so uncommon, as I found by googling, issue.
It happens in Tomatoes, Corn, Beans etc... Called Vivipary.

Its not doing so well. I guess its too acidic growing inside itself. Once I folded the skin down it began to mold and rot pretty fast (went from alien to zombie) so I carefully put sterile soil around the emerging plants. I am going to try and separate a few of the plants into a cup and see if they do better. They don't look particularly healthy and I don't want them to contaminate my unusual breed tomatoes that are growing in the same room with any funk these may be harboring in the mold. Plus I doubt the plants will make tomatoes since its a walmart product. I will try and get a couple new pics today, if I can remember.

It was nasty so I didn't take a pic.

More mold than tomato so I tossed it. However I bought some more of the same kind from Walmart and plan to try and repeat it. I will let you all know if it does it again or if anyone wants to play along... its the tomato on the vine from the produce dept in a little red net bag.
I want to see if they do grow into a plant, will they actually make an edible tomato.

this has happened to me too with tomatoes and green peppers.

I've also had carrots, onions, and garlic sprout in the fridge.
