Do you use traps, poison or both to get rid of mice and rats? DH wants to put out poison, but I hate to do that because we did that years ago in the building at the back of our property and the mouse ended up in our HOUSE dead between the walls. We had a horrible smell for about a week before we finally pinpointed the smell coming from the laundry room. DH cut away part of the ceiling and the smell was horrendous. After getting flashlights and the video camera, we finally spotted the dead mouse. I NEVER want to experience that again, but at the same time, knowing rats and mice are around is grossing me out.

Our neighbor came over today and said he went out to feed his dog and a huge rat ran out from the dog house! So I'm hoping it's moved to his yard and stays there.

Thanks for the suggestion about poison. I kept telling DH that I did NOT want to use poison. Now I was able to give him another reason not to.

This is what we use once we have done what above poster suggested. This bucket is a real safe way to go.

I used a wire hanger, and did not use anti freeze.

Good luck!

I agree this is a great mouse trap, just made one last week....it just keeps on catching them!! Emptied 4 out of it today from the garage and moved it to another outbuilding. I used windshield washer fluid to keep water form freezing...or you could use RV antifreeze as it's not toxic.
Might need a bigger version than the 5 gallon for a rat, maybe a 30 gal garbage can?
