Hi looking for someone with experience using red-kote for scaly leg mites. The can gives directions for wound care but no mention of scaly leg. I cant imagine doing this twice a day.. and for how long? These birds like me a whole lot less tonight after I picked them off their perch one by one and sprayed their legs down lol.

You might have better luck with some kind of oil or Vaseline. Any kind of oil will work from vegetable oil to motor oil.

Since Red-kote is red, it may attract pecking. If it's the same consistency as blu-kote (which is what is usually chosen for chickens due to the pecking issue with red), I don't think it will suffocate the mites, which is what you are trying to do. Using any vegetable oil and covering with vaseline suffocates the mites. You don't have to do it every day, several times a week should be enough. Some use nu-stock ointment or A&D ointment rather than vaseline. It just needs to be thick and cut off oxygen to the mites.

Thanks for that. Not sure why the local feed store recommends red-kote then. Hmm. So far no pecking..probably because all 4 of them are sporting red legs this morning haha. I will probably switch to vaseline as it seems to be more cost effective. Do you use it as a preventative or only when infested?

If red really attracted serious pecking no chickens would have combs or wattles.
Anything 'new' can attract pecking attention, red kote, blue kote, new leg bands of any color. Once they realize it's not food they usually leave it alone.

I use bag balm.

Haha... Exactly!

Most don't use it preventatively, but I think @roosterhavoc might.

I do use baby oil preventatively. I’m not a fan of the smell but it works.
