One of our ducks this morning seemed a little off her game, and after a check over it seems she has Lice, a quick trip to the vets seemed to be a pointless journey as they suggested that we get some Carbaryl 5% Dust, which i have looked at, and found its illegal in the UK so it isn't something that we would be able to get anyway

The 'best i could find' at the moment was Johnsons Poultry Powder, which since buying i have found out it is just Diatomaceous Earth and could be bought cheaper and in bulk elsewhere, but really my question is, will this be good enough, and is this the best option?

I have already given their home a thorough clean, and after disinfecting everything i have even given it a coat of non-toxic paint, to make future cleaning easier, and also if there were any bugs not killed by the disinfectant not reaching them, they are now painted in!

The ducks have all had a rub down with the DE powder, and will keep repeating that, also i have seen suggestions that sprinkling some on the straw in the bedding will help too?

In peoples experiences, is that the best approach and easiest way to deal with it? any tips to help make things easier or do a better job? or even any reassurance that you do the same and it works. Its all still new, so it is still quite scary!

Thank you

There's a product that is tailor made for treating lice on a water loving animal. I actually treat my chickens with it using it in a tub of water, and I dip them. It's extremely effective on both lice and nits and it's long lasting.

You'll probably need to order it off Amazon. It's Elector PSP. It's pricey but you probably won't need to buy another bottle again in a decade, it's so economically concentrated. It's a biological control, organic, working by enzymatic action. You could simply stir some into the ducks' bathing water and let them treat themselves.

Parasites can hide in cracks and crevices. I periodically pull all the bedding out, wipe down the floors and lower walls with white vinegar, then place DE where wall meets floor, lightly sprinkle across the floor, and place fresh bedding.

Treat ASAP with a proper spray of dust because DE *won't* treat lice or mites, and either can kill birds. Since lice live on birds you must treat the bird as sell as their coop.

You could also try ivermectin horse paste, injectable ivermectin, or pour on ivermectin. If you decide to use ivermectin let me know which one and I'll tell you the dose.

These products are available in the UK:

It Contains: Permethrin 2.3%, Tetramethrin 0.23%, Benzalkonium chloride.

DE actually is not good for Birds respiratory or ours...I use Dusting powder in corners under bedding...I never treat the Ducks..

I was given Ivermectin to treat my flock of chickens wh also run with ducks. The vet told me to treat the ducks as well. I did, but ran out before treating the last ones. The vet had worked out the doses. All the ducks we treated became really ill & died a few days later. Those untreated were all fine. Autopsy results showed their livers were bright green & they had died from toxicity.
You have to be extremely careful what products you use on ducks.
