Good day all! - I plan on going to pick up a pair of Blue Slate and a pair of Royal Palm turkeys in the next week or so. I was wondering what is the prime breeding years for turkeys? I know chickens are different that pfowls but did not know about turkeys.

Any advice would be awesome!

By the time turkeys are 6 months old, they are sexually mature. Spring is the primary breeding season and can last into fall.

I do not recommend keeping breeding pairs of turkeys. I try to keep a minimum of 4 to 5 hens for one tom. It makes life much easier on the hens.

Thanks for the info. How old do the toms and hens get before they start getting infertile or do they breed and lay till they die?

My hens started slowing down at about age 8. Toms can start losing some of their agility around 4 to 5 years old. I have had some toms become more interested in dancing around on a hen's back at age 4 instead of being interested in completing the act.

Porter's Rare Heritage Turkeys somewhere has posted their breeding practices which inluded that he switches out his toms at 3 to 4 years old and the hens at 4 to 5 years old.

I’ll have to get updated pics of him. He does maintain the bronze pattern diluted somehow. The breeder of my hen didn’t have any bronze . And her siblings where black abs slate. I hatched my self blue’s eggs and the babies spear slate so far except the putt in question.
Usually the following spring after they hatch, and until they die generally.
