Turkey hen attacked by fox

Hey guys! It’s now been 3 days and she’s still here :) she started chirping this morning and was acting restless in her pen. I decided to move her indoors due to the weather, but she walked (with guidance) all the way there.

I can’t imagine healing from this smells pretty, but she does now have an odor, I’m wondering if that is the start of infection? Once the rain calms down I’ll be going to the vet todays to see if I can get her some oral antibiotics.

Thanks for all the help yesterday!
If you are detecting an odor, then I'd re-clean and flush out the wounds with Chlorhexidine or Povidone Iodine.

Hopefully you can get some medications too, but re-cleaning the wounds is usually necessary as well.

She did not enjoy being re-cleaned, but I managed to get any remaining debris I could see from out and I used some diluted iodine to apply after I did. The smell wasn’t as apparent. I put a heat pad down for her though after.

I’m really worried about her being cold though, the weather is really warm here, but she shivers a lot, and I assume it’s because of the blood loss? Would putting a cotton t shirt over her help this? I know it will also deter her from pecking.

It’s day 4, and she’s still here. :) She’s sleeping a lot but I know that’s apart of healing. It doesn’t seem like lethargy sleepiness, just exhaustion.

Redressed her wounds today and she’s drinking a lot more than she had been. Her wounds are still pretty gnarly, but she seems to want to fight for life so I’ll help her keep fighting.

My concern now is flies... it’s been really difficult to keep them away now that the rain stopped, and I’m trying to do my best preventative measures but they are ever so persistent… I don’t want to use any pesticide that might harm her, but I need to use something other than stick traps and fly bags since they only seem to half deal with it. (She is being held indoors in our she’d currently, I keep her bedding clean, but flies are everywhere during the summer here!)

You can use a TShirt over her wounds to deter pecking if needed. Permethrin garden dust or ready to use spray from the feed store can keep flies away. I use permethrin spray in my coop in summer which lasts 30 days.
