I received my turkey poults 4 days ago and nearly half of them have died. The healthy ones are doing great, but those who died just faded and wouldn’t eat or drink despite being shown where food and water was. Figured it was the stress of being shipped across the country…

I cut two open and noticed both had a huge dark spot on the lower left. I’m not familiar with anatomy… is this the liver? Is it supposed to be that dark? Thoughts? Is there anything that jumps out at you/looks amiss? Gizzard and crop were empty.

Sorry for your loss. There is not much to see of the organs in the picture. How old were the poults when they were shipped to you? How long were they in transit? Did they have any nutrition in the transport container to keep them hydrated?

Unfortunately I didn’t take pictures of the organs, and had a hard time removing them completely intact.

They arrived from across the country, (Meyer hatchery to Washington) so shipped for a couple of days without nutrition. They were extraordinarily young when they shipped, all still had their egg tooth. 4 were dead on arrival.

The remaining ones are thriving, so I think it was just shipping stress. Though after looking into Omphalitis as mentioned above, that would be my second guess.
