this isnt the greatest picture. but one of my turkeys is hanging her wings low (like she is hot and fanning herself, but it isnt hot) and she is itching her skin on the top of both wings (not the wing itself, but by the wing where it connects to her body). no open sores , but no feathers.

just this turkey. the other 11 are fine. they are 2 months old and in an outdoor cage that is on the ground.

is it mites? i gave them dirt/dust to bathe in. but what should i give them medicine? i have chickens, ducks and geese and none of them have issues.

thanks for any help

still hanging his wings today. doesnt appear to be itching as much. used diluted sevin in a spray bottle and wiped him down last night. sprayed the run (it is like a chicken tractor) and gave them a dust bathing area.

anyone have any suggestions to anything else or what this is.

How long has she been standing around all `puffed-up' with wings drooping? This is usually a sign that the turkey is feeling puny. Have you actually seen, or felt (after picking up turk to examine - Northern Fowl mites will sometimes transfer from bird to human and make a bee line to the crown of one's head) any louse or mite (jeweler's loupe is a good tool) Blu-kote is a commonly used spray antiseptic that can be applied to picked at areas (or a standard no-pick). These guys go through 5 partial molts on their way to adult feathers at one year of age (see any little `quills' emerging from skin in areas?).

I'd be worried about the overall appearance. If she is less active/eating less than others and most of feathers on body erected - puffed-out - most of the time. If that is the case, separate and observe feed intake, quality/quantity of droppings (could be something else going on).

I picked her up yesterday. this just started yesterday. this is my first year with turkeys and i tend to look at them more than i do the chickens just because i know they can be different.

i saw nothing on him that would say bugs. but there are quills starting that you can see on her skin (saw them today and had to look extra close as they are white) today he isnt as "puffy". his wings are still hanging. last night one of the other turkeys picked at a feather hanging off of him. not like she picked it out, but like it was hanging there. molt maybe

he was right with the bunch this morning getting food and was climbing in the pile to get his. havent seen his poop yet.

i will catch him and separate him into a empty rabbit cage.

if he is molting, would they hang their wings like this?

he is staying with the pack...but when he does eat, wings are still down but feathers are not puffed.

i have caught him and moved him by himself. going to give him some electrolyte water and hard boiled eggs. he pooped and it looked good so that is decent. i checked him again and i dont see any mites. on the inside of his wing at the joint, it does look like he has some sores. but i am not sure if that is from his wings hanging or what.

i still worry. i dont like to loose anyone in my flock.

Blu-kote spray/no-pick or, if you are old school,: pine tar. will cut down on any potential infection or the poult or others picking at it.

Good luck!

Any changes write back...
