Tylan Dosage for young turkey about 10 lbs with sinus infection.

I would give Tylan orally, since it can cause muscle damage in the breast muscle where it is supposed to be injected. Dosage is 0.2 ml of Tylan 50 per pound or 2 ml for a 10 pound turkey. That dose is given twice a day for 5 days. If using Tylan 200 give 1/2 or 0.5 ml for the 10 lb. turkey. Tylan 200 is 4 times as strong as 50.

I have a turkey with sinus infection what is the best place to inject and how much?
Welcome to BYC!

Many types of bacteria can cause this sort of infection. If it's mycoplasma, Tylan might work.

Injectable Tylan can cause severe injection site necrosis. This is well documented, and I have seen it in the one hen I gave it to. If I ever use it again I will give the max *turkey* dose *orally* at one of the following:

  • 0.6 ml per pound twice a day
  • 0.4 ml per pound three time a day
  • 0.3 ml per pond twice a day
The numbers above are based on Elanco's recommendation that *turkeys* get treated with 60 mg per pound per day when using Tylan soluble powder.

If the bacteria is E.coli, or pseudomonas aeruginosa, Tylan will not work. :(

I. Was assuming it was just an allergy or sinus infection...which is why I suggested tetracycline ..if if is MS... Depending on your state will make a difference....

If we get MS here in Minnesota. It is not pretty,,the whole flock would be destroyed...

Seriously? They cull flocks for MS in MN?

Anyway, one could also tetracyline. Whether or not it works just depends on the bacteria and if it's sensitive to the drug chosen.

Yep, Amoxicillin works on some, it is kind of a guess.

Yes, on the destroying for MS. It is a flock destroying disease here. We have so many turkey and chicken farms, the animal board of health takes no chances. I have to test my birds quarterly for MS/MG. (turkeys) Blood once a year and trach swaps 3 times a year.

I had a young one with a sinus infection last spring, I reported it, (best to report instead of them find it)... They pulled my NPIP Temporarily, quarantined me and did an entire check of the whole flock. I used Tetracycline and it cleared up, so I knew it was not a mycoplasma infection, as tetracycline would not affect that.

I actually was surprised to see other states did not destroy flocks for MS/MG. Washington state if I recall correctly does not do anything for it.

I am guessing it is an economic issue here. If a farm has 40,000 turkeys that get MS/MG and actually lose weight and not gain 4 pounds in a month there is a lot of money out the window, not including any treatment given.

40,000
x 4
160,000 pounds of turkey loss. No farm wants that kind of economic loss, so they just destroy the sick birds to stop the spread.
