Hi there,

I have a flock that has been exposed to microplasmosis, diagnosed by necropsy a couple months ago. One of my pullets has a bubbly eye that is now swollen over. I am aware Tylosin can help, but I don’t want to take her to vet and spend $150 to get it. Can anyone recommend where to get some delivered quickly online without a prescription?

Thanks in advance!

You may want to call your vet and see if they can give you a script - Tetracyclines or Tylosin maybe?
Medications are harder to find lately and Tylosin seems to be sold out for now.

If you have MG confirmed in your flock you could also use Denagard which treats only Mycoplasma. Some folks give this for 3 days each month to help control symptoms.

Culling birds that are symptomatic is also another way to help control the disease along with keeping a closed flock.

Thanks for the response. Is the Densgard for swine accepts me for chickens? Thanks for the tip.

I've been giving this bird and one other who started closing one eye Doxy-Tyl powder (what I was able to order and have delivered) and terramycin eye ointment. The bird that never really developed an eye infection is doing great, but the original eye infection bird still have a soft puffy closed eye and remains in quarantine. Last week I was able to squeeze some hard white chicken puss out of the eye and flush it with saline, but the eye has been closed since and is soft and puffy, doesn't appear to have the hard white chicken puss. She'll be done with the five days of antibiotics soon, so I'm just wondering if I should keep her in quarantine a couple more weeks or cull her. What a stinky situation. I did order the Denagard, so hopefully that will help manage the MG in the future. I'm not going to cull my entire flock and start over entirely...too attached!

Theres a tylosin / amoxicylin powder on allbirdproducts.com I just got it a few days ago, try that.

Glad to hear one is getting better.
Can you post some photos of the bird that is not recovering?

Culling would be an option if she doesn't respond/recover from the illness - I know that can be a difficult decision to make.

OP is already using Doxy-Tyl which *should* treat Mycoplasma. Tylosin and "cyclines" are common antibiotics that are effective for treating Mycoplasma. If it's not helping, then they may be dealing with a virus (which is common) in addition to Mycoplasma.

Amoxicillin is not effective again Mycoplasma since the it has no cell wall. You want Tylosin, Tiamulin, Tetracyclines or one that ends in "cycline".

Yes. Mine is Amtyl. 150mg of amox and 100mg of tylosin. Worked for my little babes!❤

Glad the AmTyl worked for your situation. Looking at your thread, it seems you weren't seeing any symptoms I would relate to as MG as compared to what the OP is saying (they have confirmed testing of MG and MG symptomatic birds).
As mentioned/explained - the combo of Doxy-Tyl that the OP is using now is better to use for treating symptoms of MG instead of the AmxTyl since Mycoplasma has no cell wall. Amoxicillin acts against a cell wall, so it's not an effective treatment for MG. Not all antibiotics are created equal or treat all bacterial infections in the same way. The AmTyl is a good medication to have on hand - it can be used to treat a number of things, but it would not be my choice for treating symptoms of MG, especially when the OP is already using an effective medication. Make sense?
