So… we currently have about 50 chickens (only apx 40 are egg-laying age. The Others have… timed out? And are living their best life as chicken retirees). We have 4 pretty large coops (though only 3 are for normal use, the last is reserved as a chic hospital, just in-case- though we have only had to use it 1x when an elderly lady somehow made it inside and up the stairs when we had the doors open after painting… she panicked when I tried to get her back outside and fell down the last 2 stairs and broke her toe-she is fine now, but thinks she should still get extra treats
). All the coops also have a heated section for when it is cold. However, I am off topic.
Last year, I purchased 2 silkies and a few “mystery pullets” from a local breeder. 1 silkie turned out to be female, 1 male. All of the pullets turned out to be lovely ladies, except the sea bright rooster (aptly named Elvis- he is a charmer). Elvis is EXTREMELY affectionate and friendly. I cannot go anywhere outside without him perched on my shoulder or on the wagon, or riding in the front of the atv. Anyway, He decided he would live with Rockadoodle (silkie rooster ) and Lily (silkie female). Neither of the roosters show any interest in Lily (now 18 months). However, they will chase the other ladies around and occasionally catch them. Though, Elvis mostly jumps on their backs and just walks around on them while they go about their business (it’s a little odd to observe…).
I recently purchased about 12 small bantams (some sea bright, some Mille fleur, a few more silkies) so that rockadoodle and Elvis could form their own harem… however, the new ladies went into a separate hen house with another 2 roosters. Rockadoodle and Elvis now just continue as is… they literally do EVERYTHING together, unless one of them is causing mischief with whatever we are attempting outside. The other chickens let them in with them if they want (occasionally these 3 will go for a sleepover with the big chickens) and no one is bullying or anything (husband and I wfh, so we would likely see it at least at some point).
So my question is this: is this normal? We have several roosters other than these two. No one seems to fight (at least not that I have seen, not ever). The males seem to be really bonded? Is this a mess waiting to happen? I should probably mention that we also have several male Pygmy goats who think they are dogs (they jump into your lap for pets every chance they get). The three chickens mentioned here will literally lay down and snuggle the goats sometimes… no they are not cold. Lol I think they just like the snuggles and each others company?
All of our chickens are friendly, but I am just worried they will eventually begin to fight…?
