My 2 year old Amber-link hen has been showing weird symptoms for the last 2 weeks. One day I noticed she had dried blood on her beak and would occasionally stand around, then when I would let her out to free range its as if her beak hurt to peck at stuff and she couldn’t really swallow. So I kept an eye on her for the next few days and it was as if she was fine.

Then another week later, this past Sunday I noticed clear bubbly liquid coming out of her mouth and she was definitely thinner. I hurried and separated her from the flock and put her in a pen in my garage and sanitized all the feeders and waterers. Once I got her settled in I noticed her crop was very squishy like a water balloon and when pressing on it she made gurgling sounds and clear mucus came out. So then I was like okay this must be sour crop. Her breath has a smell but it’s not very bad. I decided to research and seen to withhold food and water for 24 hours then water for 12 hours, then give her plain greek yogurt and Monistat 7, 1/2 ML for 7 days.

It is now day 4 and I have tried everything under the sun to try and help her get better if it is sour crop. ACV, soft foods, Monistat, olive oil incase she has an obstruction….. nothing seems to be working. She has been bleeding from her mouth since Monday night after giving her food again. By the second day her crop was completely empty but she still has gurgling noises and that’s when the blood started coming out and she would shake her head and it looked like blood clots coming out. I never flipped her upside down to drain her crop because I didn’t want her to aspirate.

Her symptoms are: gurgling nosies when she swallows, mild sour breath, blood and clots coming from mouth, small white spot in mouth, hard to eat/ swallow, opens mouth and shakes after swallowing, doesn’t want to bend down to drink or eat unless she’s really hungry, and she is definitely loosing weight fast. None of my other chickens are showing any symptoms so I don’t think it’s canker or Infectious Laryngotracheitis.

Other than those symptoms she acts fine. She walks and runs, dirt bathes but doesn’t preen herself anymore. Nothing is coming out of her nose or eyes so the main issue is it looks like it hurts her to eat and she bleeds from her mouth after. She is a chicken that walks around and tries eating litter so I’m thinking she ate something and has a cut somewhere or has throat cancer.

We have pine shavings in our coop along with hemp under roost, dirt and pelletized pine in the run most of the pelletized pine has turned into dust (run flooded after storm so had to use it). I was feeding them nutrena naturewise all flock and now switched to Kalmbach flock maker but she hasn’t had any of that yet.

I really want to try and figure it out myself before finding a vet. She is a hybrid breed so maybe she has cancer idk… I have spent hours researching and cannot find anything similar to all of the symptoms she’s having. So hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I will insert a link below to google drive of a photo and video of Henrietta.

Welcome to BYC.

Is vet care an option?

If you have photos of her, the inside of her beak and her poop, those may be helpful, upload to BYC.

When was the last time you dewormed her?

You mention a white spot in the beak (photos of that if you can).

Hard to know what's happened with her, the blood is concerning though.
I think I'd finish the sour crop treatment since it was started. I'd also deworm to see if the blood may be due to those.

To treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm you can use Safeguard (Fenbendazole) or Valbazen (Albendazole). Both are given orally by weight; they do not mix well with water.

Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.
---OR---
Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days

Here's how to give oral medications:

I’m calling a vet today to see if they can get her in. I just worry about bringing more diseases back if it is something they can fix…

I have never dewormed my flock they are all 2 yrs old and haven’t showed any signs of worms but I’m thinking of taking a sample to the vet to see. Is it the new Safeguard Aquasol for chickens? I will definitely order some to have on hand.

I will try and get a photo of the inside of her mouth tonight all the other ones I took were blurry. I’ll insert a pic of her poop, it looks black to me… She had lettuce, mixed veggies and purple grapes and an egg to eat yesterday. She has laid an egg the last 2 days as well.

When she wasn’t eating earlier in the week I did notice she still had black tar looking poop.

The "Aquasol" suspension was introduced and approved for poultry in 2018. The dosing is approved to treat roundworms only with no withdrawal period. This formula is used to treat drinking water so it's dependent on the bird to be drinking well.

Most of us use the Safeguard Liquid Goat dewormer at a dose that will treat most worms that poultry can have.
