Hi everyone. One of our nearly 2 weeks old chicks started to breath heavier and sneezing yesterday. We ended up going to the vet. They prescribed antibiotics but they won’t get here until tomorrow 😭 what can I do to help her. She is eating and drinking. I added Nutri Drench to her water.

What are all of her symptoms? Have you seen watery eye, bubbles or foam in one eye, or swollen eyelids? Where did the chicks come from? What antibiotic is the vet prescribing? Did you hatch them, did they come from a breeder, feed store or hatchery?

Thank you for response. No water in the eyes, no bubbles or foam no swollen eyelids. We got them from local breeder.

Make sure that your brooder has good air circulation overhead. Odors from droppings, spilled water and food that may have become moldy, and dust in feed and shavings can cause sneezing. Respiratory diseases, such as MG and others can spread from other older birds in the air, and also MG can spread through hatching eggs. What drug did the vet prescribe? If it is a virus, antibiotics won’t help. Certain diseases such as MG can be treated with Tylosin or Denagard, or tetracyclines. Do any act weak or lethargic? Are they active, eating and drinking?

So we separated that one chick who displayed symptoms. Our brooder is a play pen with open top. However for couple days we covered them with sheets because older were trying to fly out. Now we have it covered with poultry net. I am wondering if that’s the cause of the issues… all the dust and like you said droppings were not properly ventilated. He prescribed Tylosin. None act weak or lethargic aside from that one that we separated. She is very chilled in general but she is eating and drinking. Is there anything I can do for her until we get this meds? Thank you!

Keep her warm, and if she is not being pecked or bullied, she could be back with the others. She could snuggle with the others. If she has been exposed to something, they all have. You can get the NutriDrench 2 drops orally once a day without putting it in the water. Tylosin dosage in water is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days. Change the water every other day.

Thank you!
Hi again! We started our chicks on Tylosin and doing one teaspoon per gallon. It’s been full 48h and I don’t see much improvement. Our chick is still sneezing and breathing heavy. Breathing improved a tad but not sneezing. How long until I should stop giving this antibiotics and call vet? She’s still eating drinking and pooping fine. I am just so worried 😭
