Using a net to catch a bird for taming?

Currently I have to use a net to catch my red rump parakeet from inside its flight cage. I then put on an avian harness on my bird. He is becoming more tame and he is starting to step up on my finger.

How long until I can take him out of the cage without using a net? I followed these taming steps from someone who had a Ringneck that they tamed by using repetition, desensitization and reinforcement.

You are not taming him, he is terrified. This is called flooding, it is where you apply the pressure until the animal is so terrified that they start to shut down.
