I am thinking of using plastic barrel which had soap for a car wash in it. If thoroughly rinsed, is this a good buy, (craigslist). I want to make a waterer.

Would you drink out of it? If the answe is no, then don't do it.

I think the key with containers/drums/etc especially used ones, is to find one that is labeled as "food grade" otherwise the chemicals that were previously in it may have broken down the plastic over time, or left residue in the pores of the container.

Hmmmm.....I'm a bit conflicted on this one.

I like to repurpose too. However, the residue of the car wash soap might have other stuff in it, like waxes or something, that might cause trouble.

If you think you can really rinse it out so that there is no residue, and the plastic barrel is of good quality plastic, it could work.

there is a logo on plastic containers that are food quality containers. Start there and proceed. Is this Plastic container one of those that have a resealable lid. If not then don't use it to store chicken feed.

That's the piece I was missing, I knew the containers were rated, didn't know about the logo. The same is true with old pallets, and you can look up the label online and see if it's safe to reuse or is chemically treated.

You don't mention how big or small the container is.

A good place to get food grade containers for free is the local bakery in the grocery store.
Frosting comes in the ones I get. They hold about 3 gallons. The baker gives them for free but you need to ask them. ;) It's not something they advertise.
