IT WORKS LIKE CRAZY! Hi all, there's a thread on BYC that said Vanilla car fresheners worked great for repelling flies. Yeah, right...but I was at my wit's end, so I tried it. IT WORKS LIKE CRAZY! I can't get over it. No kidding, I had thousands of flies coating my barn walls, my garage, everywhere from my neighbors filth*. I bought a 6 pack of car air fresheners from auto zone. They must absolutely hate the smell.
*neighbor got 2 hogs, they're in a 24X24 pen, flies were really bad. Then he started feeding rotting food. Flies got worse. Then he brought 300 gal of fermented grain home to feed them (discards from a brewery). We can't even sit outside. The vanilla dealies are really helping!

We haven't had to much problem with flies in or around the coop. However, if we are outside in the evening there are billions of mosquitoes and biting flies. A couple of properties down from us is an abandoned house. The yard is full if trash. Lots of things that hold water. This year has been especially wet. That whole property is a breeding ground for bugs and vermin. I just found out I have a rat in the coop too. I will be buying traps tomorrow. And NOT the nice catch and release so it can come back when its hungry kind. I will add vanilla air fresheners too. Anyone know if it works on fruit flies?

thats awesome, i have never heard of that. Does it work with all flies?
