We have to treat our yard for pests. What's the best chicken safe route?

The title says it all. We have a flea and tick problem and desperately need our yard treated. I considered getting a spreader and that bug killing soil - any experience with this working? And is it safe for the chickens?

If I go the professional route and somebody comes out to spray when is the yard safe for them again?

Thank you BTDT folks!

What does the acronym BTDT mean?

If "soil" of any type routinely killed bugs then common sense would dictate that dirt is deadly to Earthworms.

Your last question depends on what agent was sprayed.

If you use a Pyrethrum insecticide according to the directions that come with the container, I will "Guess" that you can spray without removing your birds.

Check with your local USDA County Agent to learn more.

Nematodes :)

I can't remember what species.....

Oh, you need two species...if you scroll down to the chart, the first two are entitled "Nemattack"..steinernema carpocapsae and steinernema feltiae.

They are completely safe for the chickens, people, pets...most beneficials...

If not your cup of tea to spread microscopic beneficial worms lol, Neem oil (cold pressed) will help, but the nematodes are a sure bet :)

BTDT = been there done that in forum speak.

Nematodes are real? Wow so it's not just a Spongebob episode, haha. (Thanks, kids.)

I'll have to look into that.

I do not remember which bug killing soil I found but I would have to research that more.

If anyone else has any suggestions of something they've done let me know!
Thanks everyone.

ROFL yep... Just like the ones on Spongebob... One of my favorite episodes :D

They target specific pests, mostly larvae and eggs, and use them to multiply, in essence killing the target pest... They can help move nutrients to the roots of plants, and can improve aeration if the soil too!!!

They're great little guys, lol they do more than just eat the pineapple under the sea ;)....

Edit* they are super easy to apply too; they come in a sponge,(lol yep, a sponge) and you just wring the sponge out in a bucket of water and use a sprayer to apply, then water in. Don't even need gloves ;)

I think you may be talking about diatomaceous earth as the "bug killing spoil". I can verify that I have successfully used it to kill weevils and ants.

Yep. DE works great for soft bodied critters(insects), especially fleas on dogs, cats...chickens lol... Might not be economically feasible for a yard though, since it tends to wash away with rain or watering and it can get pricey reapplying.. Great for indoor use though for sure! :)
