I brought home 6 chicks that I believe are a little less than a week old about 3 hours ago.
I have the heat plate cranked, it says it's at 130 degrees but the thermometer is have under it says 89.9 degrees. The chicks have now been huddled under it for 3 hours with no desire to come out. I did pull them out at the 2 hour mark and show them the water & food. I also have a seed starting heat mat under the side of the brooder that does not have the heat light. The temp probe for that is hanging above the food area and is reading 74 degrees. I thought since tractor supply had them in a metal tub that my dog crate would work ok but maybe I was wrong.
Should I switch to a more enclosed brooder? My house is set to 72 degrees.
I guess I'm wondering if it's the brooder not being warm enough or if they just need more time to adjust to the new surroundings. Please help!
Thanks
