I've tried both Lowes and TSC and no one carries welded wire in 1X2 squares. I've read here that 2X4 is too big. Help is appreciated. My chicks are too big to get through 2X4, but I'm worried about predators.

EDIT: Wrong Sub-Forum, this was supposed to go in Coop Builds.

My run is 2 x 4 welded wire. Alot of folks on here use it. What I did was put a barrier of 2 feet of chickenwire on the inside of the welded wire. That way nothing can reach through the wire to pull a chicken out. This is also helpful when you have small chicks they can't get through.

I would've liked smaller dimension wire for mine too, but I couldn't find anything in large length/width with small holes....so I'm using the 2x4 as well.

It shouldn't be a big problem though, as the birds will be in the coop at night anyways......

I'm also using electric wire around the bottom and top to hopefully thwart any would-be diggers or climbers.

My cage is the normal dog kennel style...But I have the bottom wrapped in 2x2 welded mesh wire fron TSC...A raccoon can reach through the dog kennel size wire and try to pull the duck or chicken out through the hole...Trust me not a pretty sight..So I wrapped the bottom 24 inches high...
The pic is alittle dark sun was in the wrong spot..Now I am worried about were the gate closes...

I have a roll of 1x2, but can't remember where I got it. I think its called garden fencing or dog fencing.
Check Lowe's online and they might carry more there. You might be able to have it delivered to a store that's close.

xfiles, don't you mean that you lined it with 1/2" hardware cloth?

TSC can order the 1X2 for you, not all store stock it. saw half grown skunk go thru chain link, problem it was only about 6 feet from me. Scare of very few animals, but that skuck scare me!! I was in the pen, lucky for me it went out the other side. Think it was looking for more peafowl eggs.

You could try Agri Supply.

I used 2 X 4 on mine though.
Predators are mostly a night time problem, so your birds should be in the coop.

People are always saying, "they can stick their heads out", but I dont think that happens enough to be a real problem.

If youre REALLY concerned about it, use the 2 X 4 and run
1/2 X 1 X 18 around the bottom

I used to use the welded wire on pens till one of the Oriental Game roosters got out of his pen and started a fight with another rooster in another of the pens. Fighting through the wire they bent it enough to break the welds and totally destroy it. Now the first 26 inches is tin

I use a lot of 1x2 wire. I love it because it is so sturdy and you can make runs out of it with just cage rings (no frame) since it is rather rigid.

It is getting hard to find and kind of cost prohibitive at this point though. I know Ace Hardware has it available for order and will deliver it to a local store for pick up. I think a 100' ft roll of 48" wire is about $190.
