We are first time chicken owners and two days ago brought home six 7-week old pullets. I placed washed river sand in the coop and being it was wet I went to our local farm supply and purchased recommended powdered sweet PDZ. It helped dry the sand out; however, I’m concerned about respiratory issues with the pullets. Would granular have been better?

Because you put it in wet sand it's no longer a respiratory irritant.
But you're going to find that sand is somewhat difficult to keep odor free. It's impossible to completely clean out the poop and it will not cold compost in the sand because sand is not organic.
