I bought my first silkie a couple months ago and I'm wondering if there's a possible way to tell if its male or female by possibly tail position, comb, or attitude.

I really want a female and I am debating whether or not to pick one up when my wheaten Ameraucana's hatch(hopefully) in the next two days.

Is there a way to guess? I've owned chickens for two years, hatched and raised many myself, but never a silkie.

Here's apple taken a couple weeks back. I just love his/her coloring. Plus this chick is on the skittish side too.

The silkie is the same age as my red sex link, which my sex link hen is growing wattles and a comb already.

Would anyone know? My silkie is from a hatchery and does not have a big poof on its head yet and he/she was hatched early march.

Silkies are very hard to sex. But looking at the pic lack of vault along with its forehead looking kind of slicked back would indicate a male. Dont quote me on this though. Youll just have to wait until it gets a bit older to really tell.

Yeah, I thought this could be a male too. He does this weird head move that I've only seen males do.

I have chicks hatching this week. In hoping the farm store has some more in stock this weekend and I'll try again. I can take him back or sell him on CL.

It could definitely still be a girl. I have a buff over grey silkie (it is SUCH a nice colour!) (who is only 13 weeks but im almost positive she is a girl). She didn’t get her pom pom look on her head til she was around 11 weeks or so. She loked a lot like yours when she was younger!

Hers a photo of her and her same age sibling who started crowing at 12ish weeks:

I can post some pics of when they were younger too if you like?

I've noticed males have larger waddles. My Apple doesn't have any wattles yet. When do they usually appear?

Your 2 silkies are absolutely adorable! I'm so happy with the buff color. I had a choice of color and I chose buff. :)

They're even cuter now! I got to choose between buff and white and I am loving my buffs. Though Rusty is a buff partridge. He's getting a nice black tail!

My rusty started to get noticable wattles/comb maybe around 7 weeks and then they just rapidly grew from there! Fingers crossed your little apple is a girl! How old is she?

im male rooster took for ever to tell if it was a hen or roo .. if you go to my pics on here he is the grey one and its a lot older then yours and he looks like a female right but hes a male .. nice big comb right now and mating the ground a lot lol ... my silkies when they were 4 weeks old they had their poofs on their heads but 2 of them died ... so i have a grey rooster and a black hen i had them since 4 weeks old i got them from a friend and i have been waiting a year to get babies from my babies lol .. i have some new ones from my friend they are buff rooster (buff based and partridge based) and then a blue hen

Your grey does look like a girl hey! Very handsome. When did he start getting his comb? I guess I'm lucky Rusty started crowing for me so young! I really hope my Furgi 'stays' a girl!
