What breed lays double yolk eggs

I used to buy double yolk eggs at a local corner market but reciently found out that the person passed on and I never got a chance to ask what kind of hen lays "doubles"...I never got one that wasnt either...any help out there in BYC land...thanks..

Lots of different breeds will lay double yolkers when they first start laying, as their body has to adjust to laying eggs, when they get into the rythm of laying, the double yolks come to an end.

theres no specific breed, all of them will occasionally do it. If you had enough hens, you'd probably get enough doubles a day to sell a couple cartons of only doubles. You could probably even selectively breed a line of layers to lay double yolks more often.

From Gail Damerow's Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens...

Double yolkers appear when ovulation occurs too rapidly, or when one yolk somehow gets "lost" and is joined by the next yolk. Double yolkers may be laid by a pullet whose production cycle is not yet well sychronized. They're occasionally laid by heavy-breed hens, often as an inherited trait.

I dont believe that any one breed in particular lays double yolks consistently. That is an aberration, as in not normal. Hopefully, someone will prove me wrong.

However, if you find a hen that does it with some regularity, you can breed from her in hopes of developing a flock of "doublers," in time.

Ill wager either that was had been done for the eggs at your local market or they were from pullets, as the others suggest.

oh..thank you...this person had a consistant run...I have bought many flats from the market and never got one that wasnt double...how do you know what is or isnt one...I just love them...yum

So youre saying each and every egg was a double? And they werent sold as premium, but rather as normal run of the coop eggs?

Then I say that person had a specially bred flock and that was indeed special. You should track them down!

elreroo...I just walked in and asked if they had any "double Yolks" today... just sold as yard eggs...you had to be early because they would go FAST...always 2 yolks...never 1...I wished I could have found out who "done it" ...but it must have been as you said a selective breeding from their coop...

Glenn Drowns claims on his website that his Delawares are prone to laying double yolkers:

Delaware (AMB): ...Over the years, I've attempted to select for large-sized eggs. Over-selection for this trait continues to lead to problems as we get too many jumbo size eggs that are double-yolked and, of course, fail to hatch....We are trying to select for the fastest growing and most productive hens, but with reasonable egg size.

My Delawares lay a good many double-yolkers as pullets, but then slow down or stop altogether as they get older.​

How on earth would you breed a chicken that ONLY lays doubles? The eggs wouldn't hatch!
