Hi, we bought 3 Araucana chicks from our local farm store yesterday. They're 3 days old and adorable! It's our first time getting Araucanas, and I'm not sure how to predict their adult coloring. If someone could help, that would be great! Thanks!

I'm not sure as I will be a first time Araucana owner this year as well! I will keep an eye on this thread though, hopefully it can help me out

Those are Easter Eggers. You can search threads and learn all about the difference.

As for what color, they'll be a mixed bag. Part of the fun of EEs is seeing what you get color and pattern wise.

What makes you know for sure they're Easter Eggers? I don't doubt you, I'm just curious how you tell right away. :) I do know the differences though. An Ameraucana lays blue eggs, and has muffs. An Araucana is rumpless, lays blue eggs, and has tufts. An EE is a cross breed between an Aracauna or Ameraucana bred with any other breed. I bought mine from a local farm store, and they were labeled as Araucanas. I googled a photo of Araucana chicks and they look very similar to mine, except for my dark looking chick which doesn't exactly resemble the photos. I'm not doubting you, I'm just asking how you can tell for sure. Thanks so much! :)

No feed store /hatchery in existence sells this very rare breed of chicken. It would be something wild if any breeder let a farm store sell his/her stock.

An Araucana has cheek tufts, not ear muffs. They do not have beards, either. I see one of yours at least in the photo with a beard. You may want to check out Jody's site. She does breed true Araucanas.

Here is a photo from Feathersite of true Araucana chicks, which I do believe was contributed by Jody and Charlie:

I've seen many photos on the web labeled as Araucana that were Easter Eggers so you can't always go by that.

Thank you Speckled Hen. You seem to know exactly what you're talking about, and thanks for giving information to back up exactly what you said. It makes total sense that no true breeder would sell to a farm store. It's disappointing that my store is selling Easter Eggers labeled as Araucanas, but at least they're cute lol! Thanks so much.

You're welcome. Ask the farm store where they came from. If they say any hatchery name, you can bet you have EEs. It's unfortunate that they do that to folks. We just have to educate ourselves so we don't get taken in by false advertising. There are very few breeders of Araucana in the United States, either. I cannot imagine any Araucana breeder selling their stock at a farm store.

I was just at a farm store the other day that now gets their stock from Mt. Healthy. That hatchery calls their EEs Araucanas. I got the schedule from the store of when each breed was coming in and there it was, yet again. False advertising.

Here is right from their site, showing that they are completely clueless. The birds pictured are NEITHER breed. They are EEs.
Araucana/Ameraucanas Chicken (as hatched)Our Aracanus are often called the Easter egg chicken because they lay colored eggs:blue, green, pink and olive drab. These birds will vary in size and color.
