Hello All,
I am new at duck and chicken raising. The amount of love is have for these animals is unbelievable! I love them as much as my dogs! That being said, I let my 4 week old Pekin ducks out back in the new run to let them enjoy thier day in the pond and the weather. They loved it! My dad went to spend some time with them and didn't latch the door on accident and one of my dogs got in and severely injured one of my ducks. She had 2 punctures in her back and a high broken leg. I PANICKED! Immediately, I called a friend who has over 25 years experience with ducks and chickens. She rushed over with so much medical supplies and no hesitation. I clipped some of her feathers to clear the wounds (they grew back rather fast!) and cleaned the duck wounds with saline spray. Then, applied animal safe topical antibiotics and a bit of honey. I learned that neosporn with pain relief is toxic for animals, so DONT use that. But honey works wonders. Her and the other 2 ducks were moved to a quiet dark room in a large dog crate (with towels and heat lamp). I switched to bedding after the 2nd day. I kept her in a smaller plasic box so the other ducks didnt step on her, but in the same crate so they could be together. I wrapped her for the first few nights to keep anything from touching the injuries while checking on her wounds every so often and applying more saline, wound spray and honey as needed. Her wounds are all healed now and she is starting to find use of her leg again. Im writing this for those who have never experienced something like this before but could potentially happen to. Keep in mind that me nor my friend are vets and I'm completely new to this. I also urge you to read any comments that other experienced owners have in the comments below. But I hope this gives you comfort. My daughter has dubbed this ducks name to be Aflac. Aflac is doing amazing, and I have learned a few valuable lessons from this.
