I have two hens of totally different breeds. Both are black with gold or copper on the necks. The first is an olive egger that is a cross of a recessive white silkied EE and a blue cuckoo marans. So I’m sure the copper color came from the marans side (is it normal to be in the laced or penciled pattern?)

The other girl is a silkie and she has a lighter colored neck going up to the crest. It also goes onto her chest. I don’t believe it is a normal gold “leakage” but I could be wrong. I was told a long time ago that she has “gold birchen” coloring but haven’t ever really heard of that.

Just wondering if there is a name for these pattern types. Oh and both chicks hatched out as solid black. The OE had the penguin markings at hatch but the silkie did not. Thanks!!

The silkie is a partridge color. I believe it's called the same in an EE, although EE don't have any standardized colors.
Oh that is so interesting!! I didn’t realize the silkie may be partridge. She’s never had any partridge chicks that I know of! I’m growing out a bunch of her chicks right now that are paint, and some of them have a reddish or yellowish tint to them, so I wondered if that would show up in their adult feathering. Will be interesting to see. Thank you!

Does your chick have a hard time seeing? Pic 416.

Mine has a huge afro and he bumps into stuff and kind of looks sad and lonely. He doesn't pal around with the other chicks (all hens). He's very sweet but seemingly a loner.

Awww do you have a picture of your guy? The silkie hen that I posted in this thread actually can see just fine but I have a couple of girls with big crests that can’t see well when they are full. I am not showing my birds right now so I trim them back so that they can see better and it definitely helps. Here are before and after pics of one of my girls. (They posted out of order but the first and last pictures are the after, the two middle are before trimming.)

Mine is my profile pic. He bumps into stuff and can't find treats easily.

I trimmed it last night but I was by myself so I didn't do to great 🙃 Do you use scissors? It's weird seeing they have eyes lol.

I saw a lot of people have success using small hair ties. I'm going to try those next.

Are you sure you have a boy? Your profile pic looks like a pullet! So cute regardless!

Yes I do use scissors! But I know that there are people here that use hair clippers and do it that way. My clippers are always a little dull so they don’t work super well for it. I usually just hold the chicken up with my left hand under the breast, and trim as much as I can. If it’s a wiggly chicken I will sometimes tuck under my arm to do it. Sometimes I will touch up a little more a day or two later. I have tried banding the topknot but have never had success with it. Trimming has worked the best for me for sure!

Here’s a pic of one of my little 9 week olds with a huge crest, I trimmed her for the first time this past week.

I think it's a Roo. He has dark red wattles and combs. I'm praying he's a Roo. His fluff just covers it really well. I think.
