My chicken has a swollen hard spot on her breast and under wing, and when I checked it, there was a big black splotch. She is tripping because of it when she walks. What is it? My theory is frostbite, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Under the wing is a very unlikely spot to get frost bite.. Is there a reason you suspect that?

What is the age of the bird?

Could be an injury with bruising from landing very hard on something for example. Or mabey even a melonoma/tumor.

Hope you find answers and she recovers quickly! :fl

Hello.

We suspect frostbite because it is black and swollen, and my area is very cold at this time, with temperatures below freezing. It is just a guess though.

The bird is around 4-5 months. We think she is a Rhode Island Red.

The black spot is very large and hard, and her breast is swollen like a baseball. There is no blood in her feathers or on the ground. I am not sure if this would be caused from falling.

Thanks.

Do you have a rooster?

To me it looks like a scab from injury. Hard to tell the location - you mention the breast and under the wing.

More photos might be helpful - is the scab along the breast/keel bone or on the side of the breast reaching under the wing?

Is she tripping over her wing, is it hanging down?

We do have a rooster, however he is very gentle and does not injure the hens at all.

Her wing is not hanging down at all, that is not what she is tripping on. She is raising her leg to her body and tripping over her own chest.

We got some more pictures today. Hopefully they make it a little clearer.

She has a scab and looks like a healing gash.

I'd clean the area with Chlorhexidine, trim the feathers away from the scabs and get a better look at it.
Triple antibiotic ointment can be applied to the scabs if necessary.

Is her crop emptying overnight?
