I know backyardherds should be the proper forum for this question, but this forum on BYC is more active with more members, so I'm asking here instead.

I have to give my goat kids their 2nd CD/T vaccines, but don't know what size needle to use, nor what gauge.

If I had to guess, I'd say 1".. but what gauge? It's for subQ injection.

Thanks for any help.

but what gauge?

18 Ga or even a little smaller will work fine.

As long as it draws up easily, and can be injected without too much pressure.

CD&T vaccine is as thin as water

I try to choose needles based on the med, though sometimes it'll be based on the attitude of the goat too...

If it's watery, I use a 22ga. C/D-T is usually watery enough that it goes just fine through a 22ga needle.

If it's oily like ivomec, tetracycline, or Bo-Se, I use either a 20ga or maybe even an 18ga; that's where the goat's attitude comes in. If the goat I'm gonna be working on is known to be a PITA, it gets a bigger needle. Not for punishment -- though it can be somewhat satisfying

-- it's just so I can push the med faster and not have to restrain it for any longer than I have to.

If it's a suspension like PenG or Excenel, I always use an 18ga needle.. It's important to make sure you're drawing up suspensions as they're meant to be proportioned.. Using too-small of a needle can effectively strain some of the larger med particles off, leaving you with too much carrier and not enough actual medication in the syringe.

My preferred length in any guage is 3/4", but 1" are fine too.
