I have ordered 6 chickens from MPC and I'm in the process of building the coop and run. I want to put a feeder and water container in the coop and also each in the run.

What size containers are best for 6 chickens?

I will lock them up at night and open them to the run every day. I will fill/check the containers every afternoon when I feed the bunny.

What size can I get away with?

You all are great and I appreciate eveyone who has taken the time to give advice for all the post I've read...and read...and read... I've learned so much and enjoyed everyone's comments/pictures/stories/advice

It doesn't take much for six birds. They will eat less than two lbs a day and drink less than a quart of water a day.

A half gallon container would be fine for each...

Yeah, I'm sure a half gallon feeder/waterer will be fine. But I always err on the "more is better" side (ask anyone coming over for holiday meals...we have enough for several meals!) LOL) If you go for a 2-3 gallon water outside, you can always be sure of having water come summertime heat. Depending on where you live, you might want to plan to have your coop waterer be one that is able to be heated (galvanized) or purchase a heated waterer for the winter (you could just unplug it for summer use). Good luck!

I have 6 partridge rocks that are 8 months old and I have a gallon waterer and feeder and I fill it up every morning and every afternoon. I'm fixing to get a 2 gallon waterer and feeder. I feed them laying pellets and they also get some kind of treat every morning (oatmeal, boiled eggs, cheese, cereal, etc). So I would suggest at least a gallon , if not bigger. And it may just be my chickens that like to eat so much, but they are healthy and happy and I get 5 eggs a day.

Good Luck with you new chicks. You'll fall in love with them quick! And you'll always want more!!
