I just recently got a pet broad breasted turkey, she's a little over 6 months now and I don't know what to feed her. We were hoping to use her for eggs and then probably breed her eventually so my teacher recommended an egg layer type of food that she uses for chickens, but I'm not sure because I heard turkeys need a higher protein level. I would appreciate any suggestions.

A broad breasted isn't designed to live long term. You will want to try to keep her lighter, and exercised. Most cannot breed naturally. Do not use a layer on any bird that isn't actively laying. I personally feed an All Flock ration. I provide a separate bowl of oyster shells for the calcium needs during the laying season.

The part about turkeys needing a higher protein feed is for the early stages of their lives. Once they are adults they do not require a higher protein level but they can benefit from the higher levels of lysine, methionine and niacin that are present in an all flock or flock raiser feed.

I raised adult turkeys for many years on !6% layer feed with oyster shell free choice. I never saw any evidence that the feed caused them any problems whether or not they were laying eggs. One difference between where I live and where oldhenlikesdogs lives is that there is no abundance of limestone in the soil here.
