What to use as bedding in nesting boxes?

I just finished building my coop and will be moving the chicks into next weekend. I am planning on pine shavings on the floor and I have a sand pan under the roosts. Is there something different I should use in the nesting boxes once I give the ladies access to them? Is pine shavings sufficient for that? This is my very first time ever raising chickens so I’m a complete noob.

Pine shavings are fine. If they scratch the shavings out too much you can cut up a square liner of old carpet to put underneath. Just throw it away when it gets too dirty. Artificial grass is good, too. It is nice to have something that is softer to keep the eggs from getting cracked or broken

I normally just use hay but ive been getting some broken eggs lately so I just orders some nesting box liners. Saw someone else ask about them and they got decent reviews.

Different people use different things for nest bedding: pine shavings, straw, hay, carpet, Spanish moss, rags, one guy I know uses chicken feed bags. I cut the long grass from places I don't mow or weed eat and dry that. It's free for a little work.

I think the bedding should be inexpensive and readily available. Try something. If you don't like it, try something else.

Free is why I saved the old carpet when we moved here. It was only fit for chicken nests! I have a few years supply . . .
