My neighbor gave me a couple of fertile large red eggs I thought were from copper Morans. What we got were totally black chicks that are now totally black chickens. Can anyone help us figure out what they possibly could be?
The rooster was supposed to be one of our old Dominique or barred rock (we could never figure out which) roosters we gave her. The eggs were very large and dark burgundy.

These two in the middle came from the same type of egg and were the first to hatch.

I was under the impression that marans could also come in solid black and blue and not just the copper neck look? If not, they could be langshans due to the leg feathering and blue but I think they lay a light egg, so I'd probably say marans since they came from a dark egg :D

The rooster wasn't a barred rock or dominique - if it was, the chicks would be barred. Well, unless the rooster was single barred, but if he was a purebred of one of those breeds, he wouldn't be. So that would rule out that rooster.

Incidentally, it's actually easy to tell the difference between those two breeds :) Aside from the other differences in shape, dominiques have a rose comb. Barred rocks have a single comb.

The eggs very well could be from a marans hen. The chicks are just likely mixed breeds. Looks like one is also blue, so the father would have to be blue or splash, if the mother was a black copper marans. Of course, copper marans also come in blue and splash, so if the mom was one of those colors, then that would mean the dad didn't need to blue or splash.

I can not find any black marans though. Actually I just found French black marans lol! I couldn’t find them for the life of me before!
