hi everyone, how are you?
in the past month or two, I’ve noticed that my two hands of a flock of four have been acting different. The one Isa Brown, frannie, has been acting like this for about three months and the Rhode Island white, bertha, has been acting like this for about a month. Franny stopped playing about a year ago. Bertha recently quit laying. I took them to the vet, and the vet said that they have holes in their egg tubes. Rotten egg is floating around their abdomen‘s and in their stomachs. He says between them there’s about a liter of fluid in each of their stomachs. He give me medication for them for two weeks, and Bertha has been doing amazing on it. Franny however, has been acting a little bit better, but whenever I pick her up she takes gulping breaths like she can’t breathe and when I set her down it takes her a minute or two to catch her breath. I am unable to do surgery on them. I am planning on calling the vet sometime soon, to see what we should do. I am hoping he will be able to tell me if Franbie is in pain or not, and worst option is we have to put her down. I don’t know if I would want to put her down or have her die naturally. What would you do?

The picture below is some fluid the vet pulled out. you can see the color difference in the consistency difference between bertha and Franny‘s.

Poor dears, I am so sorry this is happening. Euthanasia is a tricky subject especially if you consider them a pet just like a dog or cat friend. If you're undecided, have a conversation with your vet about the status of your bird and what treatment would look like versus the health and well-being of the animal. Some people don't want them to be miserable but others want to give them a chance to fight it out. I can't advise what to do, other than to again possibly talk to your vet and ask their input on how the bird progresses.

Wow, that's not good. :hugs I hate to say this, but it's been my experience that even with draining and antibiotics that this never ends well.
