so
my coturnix quail are five/six weeks old, and haven't started crowing yet. i'v heard that they will often start to crow about this old, so what up with my roos?

That's interesting... I didn't know quail would crow, and though they were quite and was why people could keep them easier in the city or even apartment buildings.

That being said, when it comes to chickens... every single one is an individual. Had some crow as early as 4 weeks and other as late as 28 or 30.

Are they called roos too? :pop

The males start crowing about the same time the females start laying. They don't crow like chickens, but make kind of an adorable hooting. I think they are called roos. Been years since i had any . But hope to get some soon.

It's likely the day length that's keeping them quiet at the moment. They need around 12-14 hours of light to be in breeding mode. Once it drops below that the males won't crow and the females won't lay. I'm in the southern hemisphere and last March (start of Autumn for us) we hatched some and it wasn't until this spring that I knew for sure who was who (for the non-visually-sexable ones).

I have one now that started crowing yesterday-2 weeks old. My last batch did not crow until I started using artificial light-They were over 9 weeks old. The amount of like seems to make a big difference.

Oh they can CROW! We hatched some early Dec. We also had adults (2 males with 11 females in 2 cages). They were all in our garage, which has a window for natural light, and we leave the overhead light on during the day until around 9pm. The male "babies" started to crow around 4 weeks, and were crowning in earnest by 6 weeks. So.Much.Crowing!! Most of the boys and a few girls of the hatched baby batch were culled for meat a couple of weeks ago (around 9 weeks of age). We should have culled around 7 -7.5 weeks - the boys were fighting a lot despite being in a big/roomy cage with no females with them and we had a rotating assortment moving through the "infirmary" cage some with pretty major head and neck wounds (all which healed very well and quickly). Anyway, as I sit and type this, several rooms away from my interior metal/insulated garage door (which is closed, and the birds are at the far end of the garage - the farthest from the interior door), I am hearing the occasional "crow" they are not perhaps as quiet as some might think. Also, the girls will sing an "egg song" when they lay - it is not as loud as the males crowing, and it kind of sounds like they were/are in pain...but voila! a warm egg is present in the cage!

:D my roo crowed for the first time today!! i am super excited! it sounds so cute! i nearly fell of the feed bin i was sitting on, when blaze, (my favorite roo) stood up and crowed. i better start seeing some eggs pretty soon.

I have a batch of 33 quail that were 4 weeks old yesterday. So probably 16 or so are males, and I heard two crows yesterday (probably from the same bird). He's an early bloomer, though, in my experience.
