I’m new to raising chickens. I have Wyandottes and it’s a bit hot today, 85 degrees. The chickens are panting, even when they come out of the coop. The coop does not feel hot, it feels cooler than outside. I put a little pool with some water for them to walk in, I also replaced their water with cooler water and ice. When is panting a problem, and what can I do.

How much ventilation do they have in the coop?

Are they able to spend time in the shade if they want to?

Please post a few pictures of your entire set up for us.
I just put a fan in there to get some air moving and allow them to get in front of.

When it's hot, they pant...especially when the temps first start to rise.
Hotter they will hold their wings away from their bodies.
Lethargy is the thing you wan't to look for, Ill toss out a few treats just to watch their reactions and movements.

Here's the things I do during hot weather:

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

The two little openings I see are just about one third of the window and way to small.
Cover both windows with hardware cloth and open them up entirely.

Additional vents in the upper part and alongside the entire wall of your coop would be needed as well.

Pretty sure those windows are open as much as they can be.
Agrees HC would be better than the chicken wire.

Was also wondering what the roof line of the coop looks like and is some soffit and/or gable venting would work out.

I would not worry about cold water. Or even panting, panting is kind of a good sign, they are controlling their internal temperature like they are suppose to do.

SHADE, all times of the day. What is shady in the morning can be in the blaring sun in the afternoon.

WATER - not cold - just a lot of it.

Acitve birds are a good sign they are fine. Let them chose where they want to be.
