Howdy fellow flock owners, just a small venting of frustration because, well, misery loves company! With all of the joys of small scale hobby farming and owning birds and other animals, sometimes I get overwhelmed by the array of problems that tend to arise all at once. Does this happen to you? Going along happy and healthy and then suddenly six different animals are in need of some treatment or other. In my case, I have a duck that got a mild bumblefoot a couple of weeks ago (we seem to be mending from that), an old goat that gets some mysterious illness every few months is sick yet again and has required several vet visits (he's still fighting it, it's frustrating to not know what it is), a chicken that I noticed was acting off and ended up passing away (waiting on lab results as I have no idea what it was), a chicken having trouble with an egg (seemingly okay now), a rooster in molt getting his bum pecked repeatedly and making his pin feathers bleed (going to have to separate him which he'll hate), and another limping duck (no sign of bumblefoot or injury)...all within a short amount of time, and each new thing right when the last seems to be resolving! It's enough to put your head in the sand so you can pretend for a moment everyone is okay. Alas...one day - and ailment - at a time. Thank you for the rant!

For me this is what happens when I plan to leave on a vacation. :barnie
This is me ON "vacation." Like, for real. We went to visit family for 4 days recently. We boarded our dogs and one ended up having an emergency vet visit because he collapsed and couldn't walk (he was given an anti-inflammatory and is back on his feet), then when we got back, a bear had come by and crushed the metal trash can we keep the chicken feeder in (it was for naught, the can was empty - and chickens and run were thankfully spared!)

I hear you on this. Our flock of pastured birds was just starting to be trusted free ranging around the time our first round of lambing started(which was kicked off with a very traumatic birth and the loss of a favorite ewe, resulting in a bottle baby) this spring. And we had 3 rounds of parents coming to visit in that same time frame. I lost 20lbs from the stress. No complaints, it was weight I needed to drop, but goodness, it was the most stressful 6 weeks I've had in a hot minute.

So tough. Glad you have overcome!!

@FNF I can totally relate to this feeling. I am so observant of every little "off" thing in each of my animals I drive my husband absolutely nuts. I'm worried so and so has a limp today. I noticed so-and-so seems to be a little wheezy etc etc. You're right, sometimes it's multiple things all at once with different animals. And then you get a stretch of time where everyone's healthy and you just get to enjoy them and remember why you keep doing it all. I have learned over the years of caring for all of our animals to not get too excited right off the bat. My Funny Farm and all its Critters are my happy place during this time of raising teenagers, working, and caring for adult parents and I need them even if they do cause me worry, they also give me unconditional love and a lot of laughs and cuddles.
