I have been reading on here about birds that get sick, and giving antibiotics. I would like to have some 'on hand' incase one ever gets sick, as the vet here is more a cat and dog vet (and there isnt another vet for 250 miles...).

Where do you get the antibiotics? Or do you have to go through a vet?

Most feed stores carry basic supplies like that. TSC and Southern States do as well. Some states may be more regulated than others, but I buy sulmet, penicillin, etc at local stores.

You can get animal antibiotics without prescription at feed stores, pet shops, and amazon. You just have to know the amount to give and if the particular animal can have that antibiotic.

If you're considering giving drugs to your chickens, you should get familiar with this website: http://www.farad.org/

It's
used by vets to make sure that the drugs you put in your chickens don't end up in your eggs or chicken salad.

People who violate this (for example, by giving Baytril to chickens or other poultry) can be fined, put in jail or (if you're a vet) lose their license.

As more people are raising backyard birds and selling the eggs and meat, more and more attention is being paid to this. The big producers are already under constant scrutiny for this. (There are people who say that more checking and testing should be done.)

I'm not about to come to your coop and look over your shoulder at what you're giving your birds, but you should know about this website and these regulations.

I only have 2 ducks, and some guinneas for pest control, and I dont plan on selling their meat or eggs :p. But thanks!

I will check out the Fleet supply store in town. My ducks have always had a 'booger' problem (past week or so, 2 weeks old) and go into sneexing fits if it wont come out, and I want something on hand if it ever gives them a sinus infection or respitory infection. THey are very messy eaters, and I think they inhale more food then they eat. I give them a cup of water 2x a day deep enough to submerge their whole head and blow their noses in it and it has been helping ALOT, so hopefuly I will never have to use it.
