I have two separate coops, each with its own rooster. Both have plenty of roosting space, but both roos sleep in nesting boxes. One is a really big Silkie roo and the other a punky little frizzle Cochin. Neither can fly but I have low enough roosts available in both coops. Shouldn't they be "roosting" with everybody else? (they are 30 wks old)

I put mine in everynight and notice the roos roost on the roosts mainly. I will have the occassional one that is still walking around when I close the doors too. I do not incourage sleeping in nesting boxes for any of my chickens saves on cleaning them cause I hate to get pooey on my eggs if I can help it.

Are your roosts higher than your nesting boxes? If not or if they are merely equal in height, they have chosen the highest and most comfortable roost for them and the rest of the gals can just find the next best thing. I'd nip this in the bud and make some changes.

They may not be able to fly but they can surely hop up to a roost? If not, maybe you can provide a ladder and move your roosts higher?

i have 1 roo and 5 hens, my roo always roosts either with 2 hens to his left and 3 hens to his right, or 3 hens to his left and 2 hens to his right

My roosters roost on the roosting roost. Say that 5 times!

They may be young enough that you can set them on the roost for a few nights, maybe a week, and they will get the idea. If not, I would close off the nests. No sleeping in MY nest boxers!
