Where to find cheap windows that open?

I'm building my first ever chicken coop for 5 to 6 layers, to be acquired in a month or so. The coop will be 6' x 8' Quaker style shed. Pretty basic, but I want it to look nice. I went to Home Depot today to get the start of my materials (2x4's, plywood etc etc). I plan on putting 2 windows in, around 12" x 18" each. Cheapest windows H.D. had were $82. Sorry, but that's too much for a chicken coop.

I want windows that open for ventilation, in a brown or red or green color if possible to match what I will be painting the coop in. I really like some of the crank-out windows I've found online at http://www.shedwindowsandmore.com/Shedcrankoutwindows.html since you can open them and the rain won't come in, but again they run $45 or so each, plus shipping

Anyone have any suggestions for windows around $20-$30?

I like these below:

We have a great Habitat for Humanity store near us which carries used windows of all types. You might also look on Craigslist for used ones. Or look for a discount window store for new ones.

got mine at habitat for humanity "restore" locally. $10 for this jalousie window.

I did a search on ebay for shed windows (I saw someone else on here mention that they got theirs from there) I'm going to get one (actually I got a set of 4) of the windows that you usually see on the houses around here that slide up and down, but mount it on a hinge to be able to tilt it for ventilation when it might rain (will also make it super easy to clean the inside of it

)

Just make sure you mount it upside/backwards, so that you can get to the latch

DaveD: I'm not quite sure I understand how you're mounting your windows that slide up and down so that they tilt instead. Can you explain further? Sorry, I'm not much of a contractor! Can you provide a link to the eBay windows?

Thanks!

Ihouse, I think a picture is worth a thousand words. Put the window in a frame that has a hinge on the top edge. Then if you mount a wood stick (1x1) hinged in the window hole on the bottom, it can swing down and prop the window tilted open. On nice days, you can slide the window open and on not-so nice days you can tilt it for protection from the rain

Ask around - I had many friends with building supplies (including old house windows) in their garage that they were more than happy to give me FOR FREE. Just let all of your friends know that you are building a coop. You never know what might turn up.

Also, I got a great deal on some double paned, 2x4 house windows on craigslist. Two for $50. If you have an active craigslist community, I'd definitely check there.

Finally, it never hurts to do some drivin' around to see what's left in the alleys/garage garbage/remodeling piles. We have a pretty active "freemarket" here in Mpls where people list stuff they want to get rid of and then leave it by the curb for you to come and pick it up. Again, totally free.

Good luck!

If you have a Habitat For Humanity chapter near you they often have a resale store where you might find windows quite cheap.

I found some good windows on Home Depot.com

Tried all the usual ways...craigslist, dump, local classified and got nothing.

These are not dirt cheap, but the deliver them to your house. Are nice and ready to use. they are designed for sheds, garages, pole buildings and worked great. Delivery for me was only $14. I can't drive to the nearest Home Depot or Lowe's for that price. Did not stock them in any store within 200 mines.

Good luck.
