I just started considering raising quail so please forgive my ignorance :/

What are the easiest quail to start with? Coturnix? Because you don't need a game bird permit?

Also, it seems like you have to order chicks in pretty large numbers and I don't think I have a local breeder. Is my only choice to buy an incubator?

Thanks!

Ahhh....another New Mexican quail lover!! LOL Unfortunately I do not do Coturnix Quail as I would most certainly supply you with them, or could direct you to some breeders around NM. Most folks I know around here are raising Bobwhites, Gambels, Mountains, etc...

The best thing you can do is check the "breeders directory" in the stickies section at the top of the quail page. There are lots of folks that can hook you up with eggs. Most people don't ship chicks. But there may be some that do.

An incubator can be your best friend. LOL

Hmmm maybe I'll be able to convince my bantam oeg that she wants speckled eggs :) I have never incubated before but I want to someday... that's the awesome thing about poultry, you never run out of new things to try :-D

Man! I wish you were closer to me! It seems like everyone here live on that side of the state lol I'm feeling all alone over here.

Yeah, I think Clovis is about a 4 or 5 hour drive from here. I haven't been in your territory in many years. This state is too big sometimes. LOL

Tell me about it lol. I had a friend out east whining to me about their friend moving "three states away!!!" one day. They were now...wait for it... 45 minutes away! gasp! I about died laughing.

It's crazy to try and find people "near by" who share interests. Just because they are in NM or TX doesn't mean they are not 8 hrs away! Yay for being bigger then most countries

Yeah, LOL, and on top of that, out here when you say it is an 8 hour drive, that is at 65 mph for the entire 8 hours!! LOL And STILL you have not left the state!!!

The nearest town is about 45 mins away from here. LOL I guess your friend would consider that too far to drive!! LOL

Yup. She would lol. Our nearest town, and by that I mean big enough to have a walmart is, two hours away. I feel like I'm going stir crazy out here. There is literally nothing here. Ah well, you make do with what cha got.

I know what you mean...but the alternative is too MUCH town. LOL No happy mediums out there. You can't beat the isolation of New Mexico however. But how right you are, you have to make do with very little. Many times I have to drive to Roswell or Alamogordo for something very simple. We only recently got a dentist up here and used to have to drive 75 miles for a dentist to say..."yes you DO have a cavity!!" And then tell you to come back next month to get it fixed. LOL

Lol yeah I hate to much city too. I was raised in Denver. I'm eyeing up the Marfa/alpine/fort davis area right now. Plenty of space, differing terrain, and just enough of a touch of art and culture. I've visited that area many times now and it seems just about right for me. I'm actualling for jobs now so we'll see what happens.
