I have one black jersey giant pullet.

She is so adorable.

I know professional and hobby farmers who insist on this breed being very robust, very hardy, very docile pets, layers of very very large brown eggs and excellent meat birds.

Why are they so rare?

I'm not sure why they would be called a rare breed. But rare normally means that it can be difficult to breed or there isn't much interest in breeding them. I would say it is more a specialty breed or pure bred. This would be to keep them a certain standard and not crossbred. Some breeds are more common in certain places than others so if everybody was to breed them perhaps they wouldn't be a rare breed.
