I have it on my coop, and everything seems to be fine for now... Also, I have wood covering about a foot from the bottom so if that helps... Be free to share stories if possible also :D

realy does not matter what you put around it if a dog wants in he is getting in, my dogs are in a chain link fence and they still tear it up to get out of it the only thing that keeps them in now is i ripped a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and bolted the two pieces together along the bottom of the cage and it seems to be working fine. but chicken wire just helps to keep the pest from wanting to try to come in..

Chicken wire is to keep chickens from getting out. It's not designed to keep predators from getting in. And it won't. That's what's wrong with it.

1/2 in hardware cloth! :) I know Lowes has a 3ft x 25ft roll of it for ~$40 apiece, it's what we bought and are going to use to reinforce our dog run.

I also used 1" chicken wire. I have 2 dogs (one is the neighbor's dog that stays here..he adopted us! and the other is my parent's dog that comes across the fenced in field to our house and stays) and they tried 1 time to get in the pen. I have a marine horn and I got it, blasted it one time, and they no longer try to get in the pen. I even had an escapee from the chicken pen (due to someone not hooking the chicken wire at the bottom correctly) and the dogs just looked at her. Never tried to get her. Course she was running up and down the back of the pen in a panic cause she couldn't get back in!

I reinforced the bottom of the pen with another 2 to 3 foot of 1" chicken wire and dug a trench around the pen, put the bottom of the wire in the ground coming out away from the pen about a foot or 2. I then took landscape timbers and put them against the bottom of the pen, pole to pole. Then I put chicken wire over the top of my pen as well to keep the hawks out. (Well, I had help with that!!) The dogs are really good about keeping animals out of the yard. Our yard in chain link fenced in. They don't even want rabbits in the yard.

I guess it depends on where you live and your circumstances. I ran out of chicken wire but had some hardware cloth laying around so I finished out the bottom of my pen with that.

Good luck with your chickies!!
